Lakeland, Jackson Elementary form mentoring program

Lakeland University’s Gentlemen of Virtue and Ladies of Virtue groups have partnered with Jackson Elementary School in Sheboygan to create a mentoring program for Jackson students.

More than a dozen Lakeland students recently visited Jackson to read, play games and talk to students. Jackson approached Lakeland about the partnership, which will continue into next school year.

“This program will have a great positive impact on Jackson’s students and our students,” said Corey Roberson, a success coach at Lakeland who work closely with Jackson to create the program. “We are always looking for ways that our students can serve the greater community. Getting involved with children in a mentoring role creates a powerful relationship.

“We’re grateful to Jackson for giving our students this opportunity, and excited to work with them to watch it grow.”

Monica Bonestroo, Jackson Elementary counselor, shared this with Lakeland’s mentors: “Words cannot express the true gratitude and thanks I want to share with each of you. What a blessing you have been to our students. I so appreciate your willingness to take a couple of hours out of your week to come to Jackson School and mentor your particular students. To me, that speaks volumes as to what type of person you are and it tells me that the world is a better place because you are in it. You have made a difference!”

Lakeland students involved to date include Diante Moses, Sam Bartlett, Kenneth Odom, Brice Kensey, Heron Barnett, Joshuan McNeal, Shakur Jinad, Isaiah Davis, Jequan Pegeese, Larry Rivers, Corvin Giles, Desiree Bass, Tralese Campbell, Paradize Wallace, DeAngelo Friend, Dante Williams and Corey Allen.
