Far from Common
Amalia Dodgson and Hannah Scherer are the latest Lakeland University students to have been chosen for The Commons, a unique initiative in Milwaukee that pairs creative students with companies and entrepreneurs.

Every Tuesday night, Scherer and Dodgson drive south and collaborate with about 70 other students from two dozen state colleges and universities on real-world projects and products for companies, organizations and start-ups.

The Commons markets itself as a think tank for talented student “hustlers, hackers, hipsters and handlers.” These fun descriptions are for people who possess unique talents in the areas of information technology, graphic arts, marketing and accounting, respectfully.

Dodgson, a business administration major and self-described hustler, and Scherer, a marketing major and hipster/hustler, are the fourth and fifth Lakeland students to be admitted into The Commons. Previously, David Del Ponte, Nate Cooper and Alexia Janz participated in the free program.

Each team in The Commons is made up of seven students with different skills sets, who work together to complete projects. The Commons meets each Tuesday from 6:30-9:30 p.m. for workshops.

When they first applied to be part of The Commons, Dodgson and Scherer weren’t sure what to expect. But a Sunday kickoff event, during which the students pitched themselves for 20 seconds, was dynamic enough to excite both.

“We’re all in,” Scherer said.

“Totally all in,” added Dodgson with a smile.
