Lakeland College was well-represented at last week’s Hour of Code at Sheboygan South High School, with one of the college’s professors, three students and a robot – yes, a robot – participating in the event.
Lakeland’s robot, Chaz, stole the show with a programed rendition of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” and a programmed dance routine to “Gangnam Style.”
Cindy Lindstrom, Lakeland’s associate professor of computer science, was joined by Lakeland College computer science students Mitch Carroll, a senior; Devin Equitz, a sophomore; and Rainger Rossway, a junior.
Sheboygan South’s Hour of Code event was part of a world-wide initiative designed to increase interest in computer coding. South High students were joined by other students – one as young as 6 – and parents from the community for an hour of demonstrations and coding exercises.
Sheboygan South, Lakeland and ACUITY are partners in the Information Technology Pathway program, in which South students take South High computer science classes as freshmen, then transition to Lakeland College computer science courses as sophomores and juniors. As seniors, students in the program have access to ACUITY internships.
This year, three freshmen enrolled at Lakeland with Lakeland College credits they earned taking IT Pathway classes at South, Lindstrom said.
