Computer science students win honors for research

Lakeland seniors Daniel and Nicholas Koerber, both double majors in computer science and mathematics, presented at the 2018 NAO Robotic Congress in Boston on Nov. 1.

Dan and Nick presented research on the possibilities of using humanoid robots to help dementia and autism patients. Their work generated much interest from not only the conference attendees and other presenters, but the developers of the NAO robots.

They received Best of Conference 2018 awards. The only other university to present at the conference was Tufts University.

The brothers plan to continue their research with Lakeland’s humanoid robots to develop applications used to help individuals with dementia and autism.

“Dan and Nick showed that one does not need to come from a large university to make huge impacts in the technological and medical community,” said Cindy Lindstrom, Lakeland associate professor of computer science, who accompanied the brothers to the event.

“The Koerbers developed their applications on their own – this was not part of a classroom assignment. I gave them the opportunity, and they did all the rest.”
