STEM Club inspires Plymouth students

Lakeland’s STEM Club recently hosted 20 middle and high school girls from nearby Plymouth for an afternoon of exploring science, technology, engineering and mathematics studies and careers.

The students toured Lakeland’s Chase Science Center, played an escape room game and minute it to win it STEM-based games. The seniors had opportunities to talk with Lakeland upperclassmen in STEM majors.

A pair of 2016 Lakeland alumna working in STEM fields discussed their jobs with the students, the origins of their interest in their fields and their pathway at Lakeland.

Brittni Diedrich, a 2016 Lakeland graduate, has been a product and materials specialist at Curt G. Joa, Inc., for more than four years. Elizabeth Koepsell has been a laboratory assistant at Forefront Dermatology in the pathology lab for the past two years, and she is a future histology technician.

Lakeland junior Shyanne Koski organized the event and classmates Natalie Polifka, Samantha Chovan, Zoe Schrameyer, Allie Byrne and Madi Olson assisted. All are members of Lakeland’s STEM Club.

The club was created by Alexa Piskule, who graduated from Lakeland in December of 2017 and now teaches STEAM courses at Riverview Middle School in Plymouth. She accompanied the group.
