'Ain't I a Woman!' pays homage to 4 strong women

Actress Deltoiya Goodman and pianist Byron Sean put on quite a show earlier this week, performing “Ain’t I a Woman!” at Lakeland’s Bradley Theatre.

The spirited music theater work, a convocation in celebration of Black History Month, featured Goodman portraying four important black females who spanned the decades from the 1930s to the 1970s.

Goodman’s first scene depicted Zora Neale Hurston in New York in the 1930s. Next, after a quick costume change, Goodman brought to life the late-1970s artist Clementine Hunter – Cajun drawl and all.

The third character was Goodman’s reenactment of the spirit of Sojourner Truth, circa 1851.

And finally, Goodman played the role of 1960s civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer. Following the fast-paced show, Goodman and Sean fielded a few questions.
